(A MOMENTARY NOW)

The world around us is pulsing and changing faster than we can keep up, but so is our perception of it. There is often a blurred line between the tangible truth and perceptual distortions. Our translations of reality could be as subtle as seeing out of a train window, or trying to read from the afterimages burned beneath our eyelids. That which we know tends to create a lens through which we understand everything around us. These lenses range from our senses, to culturally embedded notions, to actual cognitive dissonances—all of which serve to inform how our world manifests itself.

These paintings are a study of human perception, and in particular the slight or enormous variations caused by the condition called synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which a certain sense pathway overlaps with another, causing stimuli to affect various incorrect parts of the brain. This condition manifests in a multitude of ways, like tasting color or hearing smell. My paintings explore the synesthetic relationship between musical chords and color.

These works were part of a performance, in which each was accompanied by an arc of people that sang the chord that it represented in an immersive experience.
